About State License Requirements
An independent, advertising-free reference to state license requirements, built only from official sources.
What this site is
State License Requirements explains what it takes to get and keep a professional or trade license in each US state and DC: the board that issues it, the education, experience and exams, every fee the board lists, renewal and continuing education, and how to transfer a license from another state. Today it covers 12 occupations, 1,555 credentials and 499 occupation and state combinations, built from 7,033 official pages.
It is written for people entering a licensed job, people moving to another state with a license, and the employers and customers who need to check one.
How it is made
Every requirement starts as a sentence or table row on an official page: a licensing board, a state statute or administrative rule, or a state or local government site. We copy that wording exactly, record where it came from and when we read it, and write a plain-English summary next to it. A second, independent check then re-opens each page, confirms every quote and value, and only then can the page be published. The methodology explains each step.
We never estimate. If a board does not publish something, such as an exam vendor's fee or how long applications take, the page leaves it out or says the board does not publish it.
What it is not
- A government site. We are not affiliated with any board or agency, and we cannot issue, renew or look up licenses for you.
- Legal advice. Rules change and boards make the final decision on every application. Always confirm with the board before you apply.
- Advertising. The site carries no ads, no affiliate links and no paid placements, and it does not sell leads to schools or exam-prep companies.
Who publishes it
