Electrician license requirements in every state

Electricians are licensed by each state, not nationally, so the training hours, exam, fees and renewal rules depend on where you work. This page compares every state we cover, using each board's own published rules.

What the state rules have in common, and where they differ

  • We cover electricians in 44 states and DC. 42 of them issue a state license; 3 issue neither a state license nor a state registration (Indiana, Kansas and Pennsylvania), and the page for each explains the city and county rules instead.
  • 24 states and DC set the experience for the main license in hours of on-the-job training: from 8,000 in Alabama to 16,000 in Arkansas.
  • 10 states set the experience for the main license in years: from 1 in West Virginia to 5 in Ohio.
  • 11 states set the training or education for the main license in clock hours: from 96 in Washington to 720 in Connecticut.
  • The application or initial license fee the boards list for the main license ranges from $15 (Idaho) to $400 (Mississippi). That is one fee line, not the full cost: exam, fingerprint and license fees are often charged separately, and each state page lists them all.
  • Renewal: 17 states renew every 2 years, 13 states renew every 3 years, 11 states renew every year and 1 state renews every 4 years.
  • 24 boards publish a reciprocity route for the main license, and 8 apply a universal license recognition law to it. Compare transfer routes state by state.

Each state names its credentials differently, and many issue several levels (apprentice, journeyman, master, contractor). The table compares the license each state page leads with; the state page covers every level.
