- Temporary or provisional license
- Graduates of approved schools may get a 90-day temporary graduate permit (title "R.N. Applicant") pending the first NCLEX if they test within 3 months of graduation and live and plan to work in Louisiana; it allows staff-nurse practice with direct RN supervision and ends on receipt of results or 90 days after graduation. Not available to internationally educated nurses.3
Renewal
- How often
- Every 2 years3
- When it expires
- Initial licenses are calendar-year licenses; renewals are biennial. Renew online during the October 1 – December 31 renewal season; licenses run February 1 to January 31 and expire at midnight CST January 31 if not renewed.3

- Approved courses
- Board-approved contact hours: approved by LSBN or through ANCC (providers approved by the board, ANCC-accredited, or approved by an ANCC-accredited approver); 1 contact hour = 60 minutes. At least 3% of renewing licensees are audited (around March after renewal).2

From another state
- Route

- What the board says
- Licensure by endorsement for RNs licensed by examination in another state, territory or country: approved (or equivalent) nursing education, comparable licensing exam, current license from the jurisdiction of last employment, Nursys verification from the exam and current states, background check; application must be completed within one year.5
- Conditions
- Applicants with past board action may be endorsed by the executive director on submission of certified charges, final orders, probation release and active unencumbered licenses.2
- Fee
- $1005
- Route
- Temporary license or permit
- What the board says
- A 90-day temporary endorsement permit ($100 extra) lets a nurse licensed elsewhere practice in Louisiana only while the endorsement application is processed; the applicant must live and plan to work in Louisiana. Internationally educated nurses are not eligible.5
- Fee
- $1002
Military service members, veterans and spouses: RNs on active duty in the armed forces for at least six months of the licensure period may request a CE exemption or extension; military form 2058 is accepted as primary-state-of-residence evidence.2
Who needs a single-state Registered Nurse (RN) license

Moving to Louisiana with a license from another state
These are the routes LSBN publishes for the single-state Registered Nurse (RN) license. The other registered nurse licenses have their own routes in their sections below.
- Route
- Universal license recognition
- What the board says
- Welcome Home Act Endorsement (WHAE): current, valid RN license in another state held at least one year, exam or education/training standards required there, good standing, no disqualifying criminal record or pending discipline, fees paid, and Louisiana residence proven. A WHAE license is valid only in Louisiana and cannot be converted to a multistate license.6
- Conditions
- Residency proof options: state ID, voter registration card, in-state employment documentation or notarised job-offer letter (then a second proof within six months), or a Louisiana homestead exemption.6
- Route
- Interstate compact privilege
- What the board says
- Nurses holding an active multistate license from another NLC party state may practice in Louisiana on the privilege without a Louisiana license; a Louisiana single-state license authorizes practice only in Louisiana.3
- Compact states listed
- Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming11
These are the compact states named for this route; the board's words above say what a multistate license from one of them allows in Louisiana. It does not say those states accept a Louisiana single-state license. - Conditions
- If another compact state becomes the primary state of residence, the nurse must apply for licensure there without delay.3
Multistate Registered Nurse (RN) license
Requirements
- Residency or citizenship
- Must declare Louisiana as primary state of residence (typically where the applicant votes and holds a driver's license, or the state on military form 2058).3
- Also required
- Multistate eligibility: no state or federal felony convictions; no nursing-related misdemeanor convictions (case by case); not currently in an alternative program; self-disclose alternative-program participation; declare Louisiana as primary state of residence.3
Fees
| Fee | Amount | Paid to | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| LARN Compact Conversion application | $5012 | LSBN | Current Louisiana single-state RN converting to a multistate license. Not refundable |
How to apply
- For a multistate license, declare Louisiana as primary state of residence in the application; a current Louisiana single-state licensee files the separate Conversion Application ($50) in the Nurse Portal.3
From another state
- Route
- Multistate license (interstate compact)
- What the board says
- Louisiana is an NLC member. A Louisiana multistate license (Louisiana as primary state of residence) authorizes practice in any compact state, but not in non-compact states; a nurse may hold only one active multistate license, and LSBN inactivates its MSL if the nurse obtains one in another compact state.3
- Compact states listed
- Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming11
These are the compact member states named for this route. It is not a list of licenses Louisiana accepts. - Conditions
- If another compact state becomes the primary state of residence, the nurse must apply for licensure there without delay.3
- Fee
- $502
The rules this license shares with every other level are under Applies to every license level.
