Moving to Delaware with a license from another state
These are the routes the Board of Cosmetology and Barbering publishes for the Cosmetologist license. The other cosmetologist licenses have their own routes in their sections below.
- Route
- License by endorsement
- What the board says
- Reciprocity for holders of a current license in good standing from another state, DC or a US territory. Method 1: at least one of your licensing jurisdictions requires as many hours as Delaware (1,500 classroom or 3,000 apprenticeship hours). Method 2: all your jurisdictions require fewer hours, so you also need 1 continuous year of licensed full-time experience in the last 5 years. Both methods require passing a nationally used written and practical exam.4
- Conditions
- Every jurisdiction where you hold or have held a license must send a license verification straight to the Board.4
Method 2 proof: a notarized Verification of Employment form, or signed tax forms plus an explanation letter. Unlicensed practice in Delaware does not count.4
If you took the written exam in a language other than English, you must show you can communicate in English.2
A reciprocity temporary permit may be issued. It expires 14 days after the Board meeting that considers your application.7 - Fee
- $1286

3,000 apprenticeship hours under a licensed cosmetologist, at no more than 40 hours a week, completed in 18 to 36 months.7 - Also required
- Every 3 months, upload a signed log of your hours to DELPROS.5
- Also required
- The shop owner must send quarterly hour reports by April 15, July 15, October 15 and January 15.2
- Also required

How to apply
- Find an apprentice teacher (a licensed cosmetologist) at a shop that holds a current Cosmetology/Barbering Establishment license.5
