Who needs a Contractor Registration
Registration covers anyone in the business of “construction” (new work, additions, alterations, reconstruction, installations, repairs and demolitions), including subcontractors and special trade contractors; registration is for workers’ compensation and unemployment insurance compliance.1
Exemptions and dollar thresholds:
- Not required for those earning less than $2,000 a year from construction, or working only on their own property.2
Other rules on who may do this work:
- The state, its agencies and political subdivisions are not contractors under ch. 91C.3
- Subcontractors must register separately; each business with its own FEIN registers separately.2
- Plumbing, mechanical, HVAC/R, hydronics and sheet metal contractors register through the PMSB joint license application instead of DIAL Contractor Registration.2
