City and county rules
Dwelling Contractor QualifierThe statute annotation says local licensing ordinances are preempted when they impose greater financial responsibility, education or exam requirements than state law on dwelling permit applicants. Wisconsin has no state license for commercial general contractors (no such credential appears on the DSPS professions list).9
| City or county | What it requires | Link |
|---|---|---|
| Madison | Private-property building permit work generally needs no city prequalification license; submit a copy of the state contractor license to Building Inspection. City prequalification applies to City public works contracts.11 | Official page11 |
| Milwaukee | The City of Milwaukee licenses electrical, plumbing and home improvement contractors; they must hold the city license to take out permits. Home improvement contractors also need the state credential.12 | Official page12 |
